Trustee donates for weight room renovations

In the basement of the Kendall Sport and Dance Complex is a weightroom, though it’s seldom mentioned on the offical athletics website. Last semester, it was dark, dirty, and frequently empty––but that is no longer the case. The basement has been both renamed and revamped. Now known as the Varsity Weight Room, it boasts new flooring, updated equipment, and, in a few weeks, a bona fide sound system.

Mount Holyoke hosts NEWMACC for the first time: Future championships will include men’s, women’s teams

Over the weekend Mount Holyoke hosted the largest swim meet in the College’s history: the women’s portion of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships (NEWMACC).

Lyons beat Smith after half a decade

On Saturday, Feb. 5 the swimming and diving team defeated Smith College 156 – 144 this season in the penultimate swim meet. The victory came down to the last relay.

Harry Potter Comes to Smith College

Quidditch, the fictional game played atop broomsticks, was first introduced into the real world at Middlebury College in 2005. Since then, an intercollegiate league has been growing all over the nation and the world. In the Pioneer Valley, Smith College recently joined the flow of hundreds of colleges and high schools bringing broomsticks onto the sports field. Currently the teams are under the guidance of the International Quidditch Association (IQA), which was founded in 2007.

Buzzer buster: Lyons defeat Clark with three seconds left

The Mount Holyoke Lyons defeated the Clark University Cougars by two points last Saturday, for a 59-57 win. The match marked Mount Holyoke’s second win against Clark this season; also a close game, the Dec. 9 match finished in a 60-57 victory for the Lyons.

Mount Holyoke squashes the competition

Last Saturday Mount Holyoke’s squash team won the Seven Sisters Championship for the fifth consecutive year. Teammates Shara Robertson ’12 and Shaheen Madraswala ’14 were nominated to play on the prestigious All-Tournament Team.

Basketball Bounces Back

With fifteen seconds remaining in overtime, forward Tricia Chase ’12 threw the winning shot bringing the Mount Holyoke Lyons to victory against Wellesley College with a score of 48-46.

Restless Ruggers

On New Years Day three rugby players committed to work out five to six times a week over January. If the students failed to meet their goals, they would have to donate $10 to a conservative organization—i.e. anti same-sex marriage, pro-life organizations, or even the George W. Bush Memorial Library.
