At my high school, this day was celebrated with a reading from our vice-principal, good old Mrs. Novogroski, of the poem “Casey at the Bat,” over the PA system during sixth period (Casey was supposed to be “mighty,” yet was gone on three pitches with two men on base to a “writhing” pitcher; the possible metaphors are endless).

They also raced hard at the prestigious Head of the Charles, the Head of the Connecticut and the Riverfront Regatta. It was an exciting season overall, and gave the Lyons a chance to seriously prepare for the longer spring season.

More students hurried in, wearing spandex and sneakers, looking apologetic for being late.
