Take a stroll around campus, and you’ll see brightly colored messages scrawled on the sidewalks. Students draw messages and pictures promoting different kinds of events, but sports exclamations appear most often. The chalking tradition at Mount Holyoke is a unique and important part of the sports community on campus.

Lyons Field Hockey drops NEWMAC Championship to MIT in overtime, but successful season continues

With a thrilling 2-1 triumph over Springfield College on Nov. 1, the Mount Holyoke Field Hockey team earned a share of the NEWMAC Regular Season Championship, as well as a first-round bye in the NEWMAC conference tournament. The Lyons entered last weekend’s tournament, hosted by top seed MIT, with a record of 6-2 in the NEWMAC conference and riding a four-match winning streak. Looking to extend this streak and advance to the NEWMAC Championship game for the fourth time in program history, the Lyons faced off against Babson in a semifinal match on Nov. 5.

Kendall steps up its green game

If you visit Kendall this semester, you’ll notice a certain clunky old gurgling box missing from beside the Info Desk. In place of the old water fountain is a newly mounted sterling thing of technological beauty and function. But isn’t it just a water fountain? Not at all. It’s saving the College money, helping the planet, keeping you hydrated and beating away germs to help you stay your healthiest.

Lyons vs. Cougars: Field Hockey shuts out Clark 2-0, Soccer falls in double overtime

The Lyons field hockey team added another ‘W’ to their winning record (10-4 overall, 5-2 in NEWMAC Conference) with a 2-0 victory over Clark University last Saturday at home. For Head Coach Andy Whitcomb, the win was the 150th of her career at Mount Holyoke. In addition to celebrating this milestone, the team celebrated the contributions of its nine seniors to the program.

Riding named High Point Champions at Horse Show

Last Saturday, Oct. 15, the Mount Holyoke Equestrian Team hosted an Intercollegiate Horse Show that featured nine teams from around the region competing for top honors. At the end of the day those honors went to the Lyons, as they racked up 42 points to cruise to their second High Point title in as many weeks. UMass and Smith College each finished with 27 points to claim the Reserve High Point spot.

Kendall drop-in classes offer fitness and fun

With the 2009 expansion of the Kendall Athletic Center, the addition of the fitness center and dance studios provided new larger and beautifully equipped spaces for drop-in classes. The six classes offered this year include Kickboxing, Zumba, Pilates, Yoga Fit, Step IT, and Spinning. The classes are offered at convenient times, providing an opportunity for students to sneak in a fun, quick workout throughout the day.

Soccer edges Coast Guard with double overtime win

The Mount Holyoke soccer team snapped a four-game skid Tuesday night with an exciting and hard-fought win at Coast Guard Academy. Mary Cooke ’12 scored the game-winner in double overtime, lifting the Lyons to a 3-2 victory over the Bears.

Rugby shuts out WPI 22-0

Last Saturday, Mount Holyoke Rugby triumphed over the competition, and the torrential downpour , in a 22-0 win against Worcester Polytechnic Institute. This victory was not only significant for the season record, but also marked outstanding improvement by the players from their previous two games.
