College Dems Date Auction Raises $500

Last Saturday night, CAUSE and College Democrats paired up to host a date auction.

Guys and girls from throughout the Pioneer Valley volunteered to raise money for victims of the Pakistani Earthquake. The auction was held in Hooker Auditorium.

Once Faculty Show let out, the house was packed.

Students Savor Local Delicacies, Discuss Alleviating Hunger

Our campus is famed for the conscientiousness and responsibility of the student body, but in the daily grind it is easy for us to forget to put our actions into the context of our local neighbors and the world at large. On Monday, April 3, CAUSE and the Environmental Action Coalition (EAC) organized their second Local Foods Festival, called “Thinking Globally, Eating Locally,” where students and community members had an opportunity to brainstorm ideas about local farming and its role in alleviating world hunger.

Elections stir controversy on campus

Voting for SGA and Class Board elections began April 4. The controversy in this year’s election has been SGA President Katie Kraschel ’06′s active campaigning for Vice-President candidate Tina Pratt ’07.

Alums Make Music

The Mount Holyoke music department is celebrating its distinguished alums this year with the “Women in the Arts-Mount Holyoke Alums Return!” series. The first event will be held this Friday, March 31 at 8:00 p.m. with a performance by soprano Mara Bonde ’91.

Senate Explores Role Of Women’s Colleges

What defines a women’s college? Since 1837, higher education for women has been an issue of debate. Institutions such as Mount Holyoke and Smith served as hotbeds for women’s rights. Yet with the progression of women’s liberation, many question whether women’s colleges are still necessary.

Town Meeting Covers Gender and Women’s Education

Yesterday, the Student Government Association held this semester’s Town Meeting in the Blanchard Great Room. The majority of the meeting focused on discussing the purpose and definition of all-female colleges in today’s world and in the future, as well as who should be allowed to attend these institutions.

Former Professor and Chair Passes Away

On Monday, March 27, Richard August Johnson, a former Mount Holyoke professor of English, died of multiple myeloma. He was 68 and resided in Silver Spring, Maryland at the time of his death.

Johnson was a professor for 41 years. He began his career at the University of Virginia and went on to teach at Mount Holyoke for 39 years, where he was the Lucia, Ruth, and Elizabeth MacGregor Professor of English.
