Director of HR to take position at Lowell

The shuffling within the administration at Mount Holyoke continues this month, most recently in the Human Resources department. On April 29, Lauren Turner, director of Human Resources at Mount Holyoke, will be leaving her position to assume a similar role at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell as Associate Vice Chancellor of Human Resources and Equal Opportunity Outreach.

Last weekend, 23 Mount Holyoke students joined ten thousand other youth activists in attending the Powershift Conference 2011 in Washington D.C.

College expresses its gratitude to donors

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Annual Fund, a component of the Campaign for Mount Holyoke, organized Mind the Gap, an event to symbolize the time in the fiscal year when tuition revenue runs out and the College has to rely on alumni giving for its day-to-day functioning. The Campaign, the fundraising organ of the College, recently extended its $300 million goal from Dec. 31, 2011 to 2013.

SGA announces new student government

Earlier this week the results of the annual All-Campus Elections were posted on the College’s website. The Student Government Association (SGA) and all four Class Boards held the elections beginning on March 30 and ended this past Sunday.

Students abroad affected by devastating earthquake

On March 11 at 2:46 pm, an earthquake registering at a staggering 9.0 on the Richter Scale struck just off of the eastern coast of the island of Honshu, Japan. The force of the quake also triggered a tsunami that hit the coastal cities of Honshu. Fukushima, one of the cities on the eastern coast of Honshu, is the site of a nuclear power plant, where engineers still struggle to contain radiation levels . At the time of the quake, three Mount Holyoke students were studying abroad for the year at the Associated Kyoto Program, which is a little over 450 miles from Fukushima, the site of what is currently the most severely damaged nuclear plant.

Campuswide microwave misuse continues in dorms

Around 12 a.m. on April 5 a fire alarm went off in Buckland Hall triggered by a small microwave fire. All students safely exited the building and were outside for approximately 15 minutes while the South Hadley Fire Department arrived, followed by an ambulance. This is the second time in the past four weeks that the South Hadley Fire Department has been called in as a result of microwave malfunction or misuse.
