Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, and a woman’s chance of developing breast cancer during the course of her lifetime is about one in eight. Environmental contaminants and toxins may play a role in increasing the risk of breast cancer. When choosing a birth control method, there are a lot of options at your command…and also a lot of questions. “Do I like using condoms? If not, would taking the pill work? What if I don’t remember to take it every day? What if I get side effects? Maybe another method would be better…”

What should I do if the condom breaks while I’m having vaginal sex?
If you realize while you’re having sex that the condom has broken, there are several things that you can do. If you want to continue to have sex, take off the broken condom and replace it with a new one. Remember that pre-cum (pre-ejaculatory fluid) can contain viruses, bacteria and sperm. If you are concerned about STIs because you don’t know your status or that of your partner, you should make an appointment at the health center (call 538-2121 to make an appointment), where a provider can talk with you about which tests would be appropriate

When it comes to the ambiguous and confusing territory of nutrition (and the public policy surrounding it), Lewis Black said it best in one of his 2004 comedy specials: “For all we study about health, we know nothing.” After a brief moment of silence, he then went on to ask his audience, “Is milk good or bad?” The house broke into a befuddled and amused applause. Although this happened seven years ago, the question – is milk good or bad? – is still quite fraught and not any closer to being answered now than it was back then.

It seems that everyday at Mount Holyoke you meet another student who is on the pre-med track. It is a long, tough road, but many strong women have weathered it before. Dr. Marilyn Mitchell, producer of the “Meditations for the Wise Woman” CD, is a prime example, having been one of only two women in her year at her residency for becoming an OB/GYN. In 2005, Chicago Magazine named her one of America’s “ground breaking doctors.”

In chemistry, one of the first lessons students are taught is to never do experiments without the permission of the instructor. The reason for this is that the instructor should be knowledgeable about what chemicals can be safely combined, and at what concentrations. This safety lesson can be taken outside of the chemistry laboratory into homes and businesses that utilize potent chemicals for cleaning.

Two days before Hurricane Irene was forecasted to come ashore in Connecticut, I was outside of Meig’s Point Nature Center at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, CT. On that particular evening, the Beardsley Zoo was visiting the Nature Center for a special presentation. As evening progressed, I watched the sun set on a perfect summer day. The cloudless blue sky was gradually transformed into a peach canvas on which trees, beach dunes, and a glassy ocean were silhouetted.

 | “You’ve never seen it miss this house, miss that house, and come after you.” As one of the most memorable quotes from the movie Twister, it embodies the feelings of many tornado victims.
