Afghani schoolgirls poisoned to drop education

Last week, 88 Afghani girls fell ill due to poisoning attacks for which local authorities suspect the Taliban. Only five months after Greg Mortenson’s inspiring speech at Mount Holyoke, Afghanistan is still struggling to educate its girls and, hence, its communities.

Features Editor Pick of the Day: Money Matters: Women in Finance

As the summer is drawing closer, many of us are digging through our closets, doing the spring cleaning and planning to restock our summer clothes inventory. But before you hit the Holyoke Mall, you may be interested in reading New York Times finance reporter Tara Siegel Bernard’s column called “Financial Advice by Women for Women.”

Learning to write in the sciences

Despite the rigorous academics associated with science, many scientists fall subject to the same weakness: they can’t write. Science magazine explores the importance of reading, writing and debate in an article published this week.

Kate Gosselin, Octomom, Oh My

Last night Kate Gosselin was finally booted off of Dancing With the Stars. Her negative attitude (“You’re not taking into account how I learn.”) and constant arguing with her partner Tony Dovolani ruined the fun of this exceptionally meaningless and often ridiculous show. Editor Pick of the Day: Learning or Earning?

As the semester winds down, most of us are getting ready for or looking for internships and employment for this summer. With Mount Holyoke is raising the cost of tuition next year and many students shuddering at the thought of paying for loans, being paid to go to school sounds like a very good idea.

Sports Pick of the Day: Smith vs Mount Holyoke Rowing Rivalry

Since Smith College opened its doors in 1875, 38 years after Mount Holyoke College, the schools have been each other’s biggest rivals when it comes to sports. No matter what sport the Mount Holyoke vs Smith games always receive large, and sometimes rowdy, crowds. When it comes to rowing, a sport where one can loose by a millisecond, the competition can become very fierce. “Want to and do,” says rower Robyn Kranzler ’11 about winning against Smith.
