Out with the old, in with the new: TV Updates

It’s that time of year again. No, I’m not talking about taxes. This is the time when we lose shows close to our hearts, get rid of those we despise, and get to know new series.

Britney’s back on ‘Femme Fatale’

Last Tuesday, Britney released her latest album, “Femme Fatale.” The new album marks the 29-year-old’s seventh album and is full of hard hitting, up-tempo and high energy beats—proof the Britney is in fact indestructible.

One-stop entertainment: Netflix

It was a bright sunny day in Miami, perfect beach weather but instead of taking advantage of the heat my body had so thoroughly missed and needed; I sat staring at the computer screen for hours. What is more entertaining than a joy ride around the city? One word: Netflix. With more than 10 million subscribers, Netflix offers on-demand streaming video as well as rental-by-mail DVDs and Blu-Ray discs.

The Jazz Age comes to life in “Play Dead”

It started out as a favor for a friend who wanted to direct a play for her senior project in high school. Since her first play at Hampshire Regional High School had been well received, Bailly Morse ’14 was more than happy to oblige.

“Pretty Little Liars”

Everyone has a guilty pleasure and I must admit that “Pretty Little Liars” is my latest obsession. The new and celebrated drama is sure to leave viewers on the edge of their seats with its scandalous secrets and unexpected twists and turns. The intense ABC Family series has proven irresistible not only to teenagers, but also to young girls, boyfriends, and even moms.

Commemorating the legacy of Elizabeth Taylor

On March 23, 2011, the world lost a star. Actress and humanitarian, Elizabeth Taylor, passed away from congestive heart failure. The icon died surrounded by all four of her children after almost two months of hospitalization at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Though we have lost Taylor, her legacy lives on through her films.

America’s youth flock to surge of new music festivals

The music is blasting through towering speakers. The current top producer, DJ David Guetta, brings out his surprise guests: The Black Eyed Peas. The crowd bursts with energy and soon you are enveloped in one giant dance party. No one cares that it is 90 degrees outside and raining or that they have been standing for 12 hours straight. Although the crowd is made up of a monstrous 100,000 attendants, the sole points of focus are the beats and the light show.

Dior fires Galliano over anti-Semitic remarks

Jesse Jackson. Halle Berry. Oliver Stone. And of course, Mel Gibson. These are just a few of many public figures who have gotten in trouble because of their anti-Semitic or perceived anti-Semitic remarks. They vary from a thoughtless slip on late night television, to an all- out drunken rant aimed at a police officer. The most recent celeb to be added to this blacklist is Christian Dior’s renowned head designer, John Galliano.

Men with voices: Why male a cappella groups resonate with Mount Holyoke women

Last Friday, unsuspecting visitors to Blanchard were met with an energized crowd outside the Great Room. Lines of girls all dressed up and ready for a good time blocked the entry ways into the building, excited for an unusual spectacle on the Mount Holyoke campus: males.

Everyone has a bit of Bieber Fever

In recent months, I’ve seen Justin Bieber, well, everywhere. From hulu.com clips of his guest appearances on CSI, to his cameos on Saturday Night Live, to his tribute episode on “Glee,” to his performance at the Grammys, Bieber Fever seems to be a dominating force in mainstream media. So I couldn’t resist buying the over priced tickets to see the 3D movie of his life. Several weeks since its initial release, Justin Bieber Never Say Never still sells out a theater. I was welcomed into my set by a rousing chorus of, “When I say ‘Justin’ you say ‘BIEBER’!” I watched in bewildered silence as the girls around me stood in their seats cheering and hugging each other in anticipation for their Justin. After a few rounds of chanting the previews began and the theater fell ear-ringingly silent. Until, of course, Justin himself had his first cameo and the girls broke out into screams and confessions of their undying love.
