Students step up to register International Club, organize Festival of Diversity 2011

On Tuesday, Nov. 30 it came to the attention of many on campus that the Festival of Diversity, a cultural show put on every spring semester, was in danger of not happening this year as the student organization responsible for the event—the International Club —wasn’t registered as a student organization.

Penny Gill’s exclusive interview with The MH News

Penny Gill has been at Mount Holyoke for 40 years. She has been a teacher, an adviser and Dean of the College. Now she wants to go on sabbatical, read some books and go to the gym, and then return to the classroom. Gill told The MH News about her experiences as Dean, her plans for the future, and who she would want to be stranded with on a deserted island.

UMass assault suspect awaits verdict, remains incarcerated

A man who assaulted two female University of Massachusetts students earlier this month is being held at a nearby corrections facility until a hearing on Friday.

Public Safety director decision announced

On Sept. 30, at around 4 p.m. in the afternoon, Robert “Bob” Smith received a call from Mary Jo Maydew, the vice president for finance and administration at Mount Holyoke, informing him that he had just been appointed director of Public Safety for the three-college collaborative.

Alumna attends national community college summit at White House

When Casey Maliszweski FP’10 opted to attend a community college instead of a four-year institution, she never thought that her subsequent experiences would secure an invitation to the White House. Maliszweski transferred to Mount Holyoke after she graduated from Raritan Valley Community College. She was one of 18 students invited to speak at the first-ever White House Summit on Community College on Oct. 5.

Transfer students supported through program funds

The number of transfer students enrolled at Mount Holyoke has nearly quadrupled in the past three years. During the 2007-2008 academic year, 46 transfer students from community colleges were enrolled, according to school records. For the 2009-2010 academic year, that number increased to 180. In 2006 the College received $779,000 from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation to further its commitment to enrolling high-achieving students from community colleges through the Pathways Program.

Public safety director candidates make presentations

The committee in charge of finding a new director for the 3-College Public Safety Collaborative has narrowed the applicant pool down to three candidates.

Various departments restructured, resulting in promotions and layoffs

As the new semester at Mount Holyoke begins, students have been busy re-adjusting to college life. The College administration has also been undergoing a similar reshuffling. Former Dean of Students, Liz Braun, is no longer at Mount Holyoke College.

MHN seeks alternative funding after filing incomplete application

On Tuesday, April 27 at the weekly Student Government Association (SGA) meeting, the SGA Treasurer announced which student orgs would receive Regular Funding. Because the Mount Holyoke News (MHN) submitted an incomplete application past deadline, the news organization received $0 from its Regular Funding request of $25,000.

Labor Dept plans to tighten restrictions on internships

The New York Times recently reported that the number of unpaid internships has grown and, with it, federal and state regulator’s concern that employers are taking advantage of career-minded students to illegally obtain free labor.
