The Chemistry Department concluded its search for a new biochemistry professor last week, announcing Kathryn McMenimen ’03 as the chosen candidate.
McMenimen, who will assume the post next fall, completed her PhD in chemistry at the California Institute of Technology after studying biochemistry at Mount Holyoke.

Immigrants and their lives never fail to fascinate artists. After all, stepping into a new country without Orientation 101 certainly brings up various stories, especially when that country is the United States. Familiar dynamics of culture clash, hardships of being an outsider, pursuit of a sense of belonging, and multiple identity crises—constantly inspire novelists and film makers.

For a second time this semester, Mount Holyoke College Model United Nations (MHCMUN) proudly welcomed back her team from another highly competitive national conference. Its members brought back home not only the incredible MUN experiences, argumentative skills and bigger ambitions, but also a number of impressive awards.

Laurie Priest, Director of Athletics & Chair of Physical Education and Athletics, was surrounded by questions about the new physical education minor Mount Holyoke offers, on Oct. 2 in the Field Hockey lounge of Kendall. Although the Department does not have a physical education major program, it does offer two courses for academic credit (Women in Sport and Sport Pedagogy) and an academic independent credit option.

After being ranked number five in the nation for the “most beautiful campus,” according to The Princeton Review Guide’s 2009 edition, Mount Holyoke College has opened the Abbey Memorial Chapel to the public for weddings and rehearsals starting this August.

Despite a history of disastrous hurricanes and the impact of the global economic recession, the spirits of Cubans were not at all dampened as the nation welcomed its 50th birthday this May.
Though it constantly suffers from poverty, this small Caribbean country that has always been a pain in the neck for the United States certainly takes some pride in its ongoing national recovery.
