Fay is a junior from Seattle studying Anthropology, Film Studies and Music. When she's not writing for MHN, she's probably dumpster diving for bicycle parts or random trinkets, collecting records/bootleg 8 tracks, composing play lists, cycling, practicing music, editing a film in MEWS or sipping caffeine and "studying" in a coffee house somewhere. She loves going to concerts, conversing with musicians and listening to literally all styles, genres and eras of music.

Spring music is in the air

It’s April and the sun has popped out early to bathe the campus in warm, sunny weather. How great this must be for the student who bought or unpacked her bathing suit months ago, waiting for the day she could finally study and sun bathe out on the green. Inevitably, what comes along with that luxury is the growing anticipation for the fast approaching summer break and graduation day. I have been experiencing a musical anticipation that began growing back in early fall.

Rubblebucket Orchestra at Pearl Street Night Club

It must have slipped my notice, but at about 10:30 pm on Friday night in Northampton, I looked around and realized that Pearl Street Night Club was stuffed with people.

FELA! on Broadway: A Production Unlike Any Other

Two weekends ago, I traveled to New York City to see a musical unlike any I have seen before. Fela!, directed and choreographed by Bill T. Jones, invites its audience to explore the spirited and politically defiant world of the late 70s Nigerian Afrobeat king Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

Out with the NEW, in with the OLD: The freshest vinyl

I remember it fondly: the day my conversion to vinyl began. I was twelve. It was a Sunday and I had finished an amazing one and a half hours of watching a very pink Molly Ringwald as Andy Walsh in Pretty in Pink. She was popular in The Breakfast Club. She felt forgotten in Sixteen [...]

Love is in the air with Hot Chip

It’s February and people are finding love, spreading love, redefining love and even proclaiming “down with love.” I recently found love stashed in Hot Chip’s freshly released fourth album, One Life Stand. Not only is the pun in the title intended, but the two founding boys of the British band, Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard, [...]

Hot off the Speaker: The Watson Twins

Identical twins Chandra and Leigh Watson are a fairly recent musical duo out of Los Angeles. The two singer-songwriters gained prominence in 2006 as backup vocals for Jenny Lewis on Rabbit Fur Coat. In 2008, The Watson Twins’ first independent album, Fire Songs, showcased their subtle rural sound and now they are releasing their sophomore [...]

A melting of the frost within

Since arriving at Mount Holyoke, I have met students who have grasped and fine-tuned many of the things that give them meaning and provide them with maps of the future. I have also met students who are experiencing the turmoil and boundlessness of “not knowing.

Making music their own: words from a genre-rejecting band

Tomorrow night, Austin, Texas-based band Full Service will play in Northampton at the Iron Horse Music Hall as they continue their cross-country tour. You may not hear their name tossed around every day on MTV or KISS FM’s biggest hits, but they have a cult following of fans who are guaranteed to pack the houses they perform in.

Karen O. and the Kids bring this unique movie to life

I admit it. When I first found out that Karen O. of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs was spearheading the soundtrack for Where the Wild Things Are, I shrugged my shoulders, crinkled my nose, crossed my eyes and asked, “Why!?” My confusion wasn’t directed towards whether Karen O.
