Seven Sisters Classic: Lyons go 2-0

After opening their season with a 4-1 victory over Simmons College and then dropping a 2-0 decision against Nichols, the Mount Holyoke Field Hockey team posted a perfect 2-0 record in the 25th annual Seven Sisters Classic last weekend. The tournament, hosted by Bryn Mawr College, featured Mount Holyoke facing off against the hosts on Saturday and then meeting up with Wilson College for a match on Sunday.

Charity Sweeney named new Athletic Trainer and Fitness Center Director

If you’ve paid a visit to the training room in Kendall lately, you’ve probably seen a new face. Former Athletic Trainer Pete Olsen is no longer there. The Athletic Department has hired Charity Sweeney, MS, ATC, LAT, CSCS, as a new Athletic Trainer and Fitness Center Director.

Should athletes be getting more sleep?

College students are known for sacrificing sleep in order to stay up partying or studying. While we seem to get by ok on less sleep, those of us who play a sport may want to consider clocking in some additional hours of slumber. Studies show that getting extra sleep can actually improve the athletic performance of college athletes.

Riding competes at nationals

The Mount Holyoke equestrian team wrapped up the 2008-09 season last week with a solid 6th place finish at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Nationals at the Tennessee Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The team competed with more than 350 colleges in the Hunter Seat classes.

Tennis takes down Union in season final

The Mount Holyoke tennis team topped Union 6-3 at home last Saturday in what was the Lyons final match of the 2008-2009 season. The hosts entered the day coming off wins in their previous two home matches, while Union was hoping to bounce back after falling to Smith 7-2 on April 4.

Soccer falls to Japan 1-3

The Mount Holyoke soccer team hosted a Japanese Women’s College All-Star team in an exhibition game last Saturday afternoon on the turf field. The Lyons took an early 1-0 lead in the first half but the Japanese players answered with four goals in the second frame to come away with the 4-1 victory.

Soccer springs into action

Spring is traditionally a season for sports like tennis, lacrosse and golf, but once the snow has melted you may see another team practicing outside. The Mount Holyoke soccer team has begun its non-traditional spring season starting with practices this week.

Riding earns High Point honors

Mount Holyoke hosted its annual spring Horse Show last Saturday. Any Lyons fans who made the trip down to the Equestrian Center and stood around in the chilly rink to catch the Game of the Week were certainly rewarded, as the hosts racked up 36 points, enough to be crowned the overall winner and earn High Point honors.

In close contest, Wellesley upends Mount Holyoke

If you went to the basketball game last Saturday afternoon, then you were treated to an exciting matchup between the Lyons and NEWMAC foe Wellesley Blue. In a game where the score was tied ten times and the lead changed 14 times, Wellesley came away on top at the end by a close score of 54-52.

Lyons squash the competition

It was one of the Mount Holyoke squash team’s season goals that they win the Seven Sisters Championship. Last weekend the Lyons achieved that goal. After cruising to a 9-0 win over Smith, Mount Holyoke swept Vassar 9-0 to capture their third straight Seven Sisters Championship title.
