Author of Three Cups of Tea presents new approach to peace

Greg Mortenson, author of the New York Times bestseller Three Cups of Tea and the new Stones into Schools, spoke to a packed Chapin Auditorium this past Saturday. President Creighton sat in the front row for the lecture. The event was co-sponsored by the Weissman Center, the President’s Office, Student Programs, the Odyssey and Tantsaqua High School, whose students raised $15,000 to bring Mortenson to western Massachusetts.

Flynn to teach Philosophy of Law

A new course, Philosophy of Law, will be offered this spring by the Philosophy Department. Taylor Flynn, currently a professor at the Western New England College (WNEC) of Law in Springfield, will teach the class. While she has taught the course elsewhere in the past, this is the first time that Flynn will be teaching it at Mount Holyoke.

Spring break training trips prepare teams for season

While many use spring break to relax and get some sun, three athletic teams used the week to train for the tough spring season. The golf team traveled to Jekyll Island, GA, for a tournament, lacrosse went to West Palm Beach, FL, for training and a tournament and the crew team traveled to Woodbridge, VA.

Laurie Priest wins Pathfinder Award

Laurie Priest was selected as the 2009 recipient of the Pathfinder award, which is given to recognize outstanding contributions and commitment to girl’s and women’s athletics. The award is given annually by the Massachusetts Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Lacrosse scrimmage preps for season

After a grueling workout in preparation for Saturday’s game, the lacrosse team scrimmaged in beautiful playing weather on the cleared turf field. Rowers compete at C.R.A.S.H.-B. S

Despite Sunday’s inclement weather, members of the crew team were able to compete at C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints, an indoor 2-kilometer rowing competition in Boston. The event, whose name is an abbreviation of “Charles River All-Star Has-Beens” is held annually at Boston University.

J-term sports psych class works the brain

A new class was offered this J-term that students found to be very useful and enjoyable Taught by Liz Mullin ’06, the sports psychology class introduced athletes to the many different ways of looking at sports. Topics covered included motivation, the role of aggression, anxiety and stress and confidence.
