Students attend WPSP in Washington

On Dec. 15, 2011, 27 Mount Holyoke students and faculty traveled to the Washington, D.C. launch of the Women in Public Service Project. The project is an initiative driven by the Seven Sisters colleges that remain single-sex in conjunction with the State Department to attract more women to careers “in public service and political leadership to forge global solutions to improve governance, expand civil rights, and combat corruption,” as the program’s mission statement explains.

On December 15th, 2011, Mount Holyoke students attended the Public Service Project Colloquium, hearing from distinguished speakers Madeleine Albright, Hillary Clinton, Atifete Jahjaga, Christine Lagarde, Farah Pandith, Gloria Steinem, Melanne Verveer, and many others.

Rock ‘n’ roll photography goes behind the scenes of stardom

ALL ACCESS: The Rock ‘n’ Roll Photography of Ken Regan, released this past October, brings readers behind the scenes and on stage with music legends like Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin. The 304-page book is a compilation of high quality snapshots by famous photographer Ken Regan, beginning in the 1960’s and up through the present. The introduction, by The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, and preface by Keith Richards add authenticity to the collection, and demonstrate the lifelong connections Regan has made throughout his career.

Andrew Bird’s soaring performance

Andrew Bird turned the Calvin Theater into his playground last Thursday night in Northampton, MA. From singing and whistling to playing the guitar and violin, Bird showcased a wide variety of his musical talents. A fan since 2008, seeing his performance reminded me of how important it is to continue experiencing music live rather just on iTunes.

Lacrosse Fall Ball comes to a close

Due to NCAA Division III rules, every team has limited preseason training with their coach. Therefore, Head Lacrosse Coach Miriam Esber always reserves some time for offseason training. Since lacrosse’s competitive season is in the spring, the team had 14 Fall Ball training sessions this year.

Crew visits farm for potato harvest

In addition to the crew team’s usual pre-season practices, this year captain Hannah Blackmer ’12 inspired the group to volunteer on Caretaker Farm in Williamstown, MA. Over the summer Blackmer was one of four apprentices interning at the vegetable farm, and spoke fondly of rowing to Don Zasada, the farm’s owner.

Naginata team hits on “men” at three day tournament

From April 22 to 24 Mount Holyoke College hosted the spring taikai, the Japanese word for tournament, for the Greater New York Naginata Federation.

Dressage heads to Nationals

Mount Holyoke’s dressage team hosted their annual Open Dressage Show this past Sunday, April 17. In this competition, riders are evaluated on an individual basis, allowing any Mount Holyoke student with dressage experience to compete, regardless if they are a part of the College’s team.

Rugby club member wrestles her way to national titles

Lauren Clark-Johnson ’13 began wrestling her freshman year of high school and was the only girl on the team. Now 20 years old, she’s an All-American athlete who placed second in her weight division at Nationals this past March.
