It’s SPRING once again here at Mount Holyoke, a time when we bring out our shorts, our sandals, our lawn chairs, our picnic baskets and of course, those round plastic aerodynamic discs. It’s Ultimate Frisbee time! Ultimate is a staple part of college life and naturally Mount Holyoke has its own following. It all started four years ago when a group of interested students got together to practice and learn the game. Just last year, Ultimate became an official club sport, competing in tournaments around Massachusetts. Captains Johanna Ledley ’11 and Sarah Dunn ’11 head up a team of over 20 students.

Last weekend the team competed at Stonehill College. Upcoming tournaments include one this weekend at Smith, followed by sectionals in Williamstown. Ultimate offers a different kind of competition. Like all sports it requires strategy, skill and practice. However, it is generally an inclusive sport that everyone can learn to play. Teammates enjoy the group atmosphere and shared interest that comes with being on the team. As Ledley puts it, “Ultimate is about learning to play the game, loving the game and loving the people who play the game.” So this weekend if you find yourself tossing around a disc, think about heading over to Smith to support our Ultimate team as they challenge their competitors for a victory!
