Lacrosse trumps rival Smith: 16-3 on Senior Night

Tuesday night, Mount Holyoke lacrosse played their last home game of the season, defeating Smith College. “I am confident that we will play as we have practiced, and not allow the emotional rivalry with Smith affect our composed play,” said head coach Miram Esber before the match. Holyoke was able to do just that, and moved forward in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference with a 16-3 triumph over Smith.

Five of these goals were scored by midfielder Peggy Wefald ’10, and in the last eight games Wefald has scored three goals or more. Clara Raguei, Perry Markell ‘10, Georgia Markell ‘11, Alex Crean ‘12, Lindsay Kanno ‘13, and Molly Macdonald ‘13 netted the rest of Holyoke’s goals. Holyoke ended their match with an upper hand in shots (34-10), draw controls (15-6) and ground balls (22-9). Goalkeeper Jessica Brezicha ’10 had six saves, and at the most Holyoke was ahead by 14 goals.

“If there is one game that they are really going to play hard in it’s this one (because of our Seven Sisters rivalry). Therefore, we know that we will have to out-hustle them, out-play them, and to not defeat ourselves,” said Crean beforehand. “The next two games will be a great opportunity to end our regular season with a strong record and enter our post-season competition prepared to face any competitor,” added Perry Markell.

Prior to the game Holyoke celebrated Wefald, Markell, Brezicha, Kristen Cody, and Rachel Kurzwell’s last game as seniors at Mount Holyoke. On Thursday, April 22, the Lyons will play the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m.
