Hannah HowardHolyoke’s team drove down Friday and stayed in a hotel in Middletown, RI, hoping to rest up before the scrum filled weekend. Saturday morning, Holyoke took on Keene State College with a 12-5 win. “We played some really good defense and held them off,” said Hannah Howard ’12. Holyoke scored two tries and a conversion kick by Caitlin Pacheco ’13.
Later that Saturday, Holyoke took on the former Division III National Champions, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). “MIT played great defense and had some really fast kids and our team isn’t known for our speed…but we really strategized and shut them down,” said Emily Bouvier ’13. MIT defeated Holyoke by twelve and went on to win the champions bracket.
After a long Saturday, Holyoke continued their rugby expedition with another three games that Sunday. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth proved to be a rough match for Holyoke. “A girl on UMass Dartmouth purposefully elbowed me in the throat,” explained Amy Plunk ’12. The two got into a brawl on the field but a yellow card was only awarded to Holyoke. “She should have gotten a yellow card too, but the Sir didn’t see her throw the elbow,” continued Plunk. Holyoke eventually defeated UMass Dartmouth as well as Wentworth Institute of Technology and Franklin Pierce College. “We won more this weekend than we have the whole season,” said Cade Fridenbach ‘13
Holyoke will be playing in a tournament at Wesleyan University this coming weekend.
