MoHo MD: Minds under pressure

For me, and undoubtedly many of my fellow ’10 classmates, this final stretch of our college career is full of migraine inducing stresses. You have to find a job, but not before finishing your thesis. While planning on applying to graduate schools, you discover that your top choice requires 1-2 years of professional experience, while, ironically, your top choice on your job list requires a degree from the graduate program you just looked at. Combine the real life pressure with cranial pressure and it’s enough to make anyone lose their minds. But what would happen if you lost your sight along with it?

Such was the case with Kim Goodrich, a 39-year-old mother who began to experience severe debilitating migraines. Due to her hectic and stressful schedule as a mother and full-time hairdresser, she figured she just needed some vacation time to destress. On a family vacation however, the migraines she experienced were accompanied by projectile vomiting, but after sleeping through the night she felt much better. As the months went by she noticed that as her headaches worsened, so did her eyesight. However a trip to the ophthalmologist didn’t reveal anything out of the ordinary.

This went on for some time, until one morning Goodrich awoke to discover she had lost her vision in her right eye. Something was definitely wrong. Even after a number of tests and CT scans, doctors concluded that it was simply a case of extremely bad migraines. What was most baffling about this case was that the symptoms were never constant or consistent. Sometimes her vision was blurred. Other times she was rendered almost completely blind. Each time her eyes were checked however, everything appeared to be normal. Doctors constantly urged Goodrich to “relax” and prescribed her anything from anti-anxiety meds to over the counter pain killers. Nothing seemed to work, and Goodrich found each episode to be increasingly painful.

What was the mystery behind these headaches? And why were the signs so elusive? Stay tuned next week for the answer!
