Making it work at the leadership conference

On Saturday, March 27th the Lyon’s Network held their annual Women’s Global Leadership Conference. The conference featured speakers from a wide range of careers and disciplines like business and management to marketing, advertising, non-profit and environmental work. President Joanne Creighton spoke before attendees. She commented on the efforts of the Lyon’s network and advantages of connecting women with other women through business. However, “women have not achieved equity and parity by any measure in the United States and in other Western countries, let alone in the East and in the larger world. Four decades after the Equal Pay Act, women in the United States earn on average 79 cents of every dollar of their male counterparts,” said Creighton.

The conference concluded with a career fair where students were able to meet with speakers and discuss career options. Organized by an active board of students, including Vennie Encheva ’10, Heba Aladawy ’10 and Han Zhang ’10. Said organizer Encheva, “The conference was a collaborative effort and we acknowledge its success came from the joint effort and devotion of time and resources of all members of the organization – board members, operations, marketing, registration chairs and successful interaction with offices on campus. Our goal was to instill inspiration and motivation in our conference attendees to pursue their dreams and realize their leadership potential.” Although all current organizers will be graduating, “we hope to keep mentoring the Lyon’s Network members and stay in touch and participate in various capacity,” said Encheva.
