Unique fashion finds for the bibliophile

With summer rapidly approaching, stacks of leisure books are looking rather enticing compared to that mountain of textbooks and PDF files you’ve collected over the past semester. As soon as finals are through, you’re itching to pick up something that doesn’t include the words “gender,” “lipid,” “tariff,” or “mise-en-scene.” So when you rally yourself for days in the sun, fully equipped with a bottle of SPF 30 and a mobile-library’s worth of books, be sure to scope out these sites that will take your summer reading list out of your bookshelf and into your closet.

A limited selection of tees, but each design is original and inspired. Kafka Cotton held a contest this past year for users to vote on which designs would be made into tees. Designs include a rope-outlined whale and harpoon inspired by Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and a handwritten exclamation “Yossarian!!!(?)!” inspired by Joseph Heller’s Catch-22. Five percent of Kafka Cotton’s proceeds go towards literacy causes.

Out of Print Clothing

Out of Print boasts a great selection of stylish, well-designed tees, many sporting “out of print” covers of classic literary works. Bright colors and a wide array of titles to choose from, including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Fahrenheit 451, Lolita, and Catcher in the Rye. Out of Print promotes the power books have to enlighten people and create discussion in community. For each shirt sold, one book is donated to a community in need through their partner Books For Africa.

Novel-T
Novel-T encourages buyers to root for their favorite character, just as they would their favorite baseball player. Shirts are part jersey, part literary homage. The on-line store looks more like a line-up than a catalog, featuring player logos and last names and team number on the back. With a small letter “A” on the left breast, Hester Prynne is team player #8, while Tom Sawyer, with oar insignia on the front, is player #14. Edgar Allen Poe and Captain Ahab are also on the roster. Novel-T donates $1 of the purchase price of each shirt to 826NYC, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages six to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills.

Literary Rags

Simple in concept and design, Literary Rags sports a wide list of writers to choose from. Stylized faces of famous novelists, poets, dramatists and philosophers adorn tees and feature a quotation by the author on the back. Designs can be printed on a selection of colors.
