What’s a Pole to Do?

Last Saturday the Western Hemisphere awoke to the shocking news of the deaths of the Polish President Lech Kaczyński and 95 of his senior government officials. So what does a country with virtually no governmental representation left do? Will Poland recover?

The Eastern European country of Poland sustains a stable democratic government, though it clearly still bears the mark of a post-communist state. The nation’s stability is key to its recovery from the weekend’s tragedy. Donald Tusk, Polish Prime Minister, is charged with maintaining the stability of the country as new officials are elected into office.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was quoted saying, “This is a tragedy for us, too. We feel your pain,” in an address reaching out to the Polish people. Poland is currently in a state of mourning the lost leadership, which has significantly aided the country’s transition from a communist regime to a budding democracy in recent years.

Poland is sure to see an influx of support for its people as the nation undergoes leadership transitions once again. The process, the Western world can only hope, will enable Poland to rebuild its government and sustain the strengths of the previous administration in new light.
