Movie Watch: The Last Song

While not one of the best Nicholas Sparks movies (nothing can beat “A Walk To Remember“), “The Last Song” has all of the right components unfortunately, those components were  not properly executed. This is a bit disappointing considering all of the press and hype about the film.

Miley Cyrus’ non “Hannah Montana” acting debut as Ronnie was lack luster, weak at the emotional parts and lacking depth as an overall character. In fact, the best  part came from her on-screen brother Jonah, played by Bobby Coleman, where he  displayed incredible emotion for a 12 year old that even I wanted to cry.   ( Maybe Cyrus should take some lessons from the kid.) Liam Hemsworth, Australian actor and current boyfriend of Cyrus, appeared to be on screen just for his “Abercrombie” style good looks. Like Cyrus, his character was underdeveloped and the viewer was left with little attachment to him or his story line.

Tyler Protono- Goodwin, a sophomore at Mount Holyoke, sums it up nicely, ” it had all of the components for a good movie, if the acting was stronger it could have been a good story… the overall cast made it less enjoyable.” Protono – Goodwin, who recently read the novel was disappointed by the lack of depth each character had in comparison.

Perhaps part of the problem with this film is that Sparks created the screen play first for Cryus (she named the main character’s name after her grandmother) as opposed to starting with a book and then transforming it into film.

Overall the movie was somewhat entertaining although a bit slow.  The soundtrack was definitely a major highlight featuring songs from Marroon 5, Iron and Wine, OneRepublic, and Ra Ra Riot.  My suggestion – read the book outside in the sun this weekend instead of seeing the movie. It will be more enjoyable, plus you will get a tan!
