Movie Watch: Date Night

When you pair two pure comic geniuses together laughs are bound to occur. The two biggest stars of NBC’s Thursday night of comedy, Steve Carell (“The Office”) and Tina Fey (“30 Rock”) team up for “Date Night” which opened on Friday. As a middle age couple who witness their friends’ marriage disintegrate they attempt to keep their relationship interesting with a date into New York City. Their night becomes more than a little “evening on the town” when they get tangled up in a case of mistaken identity. Cue cop chases, breaking and entering, Mark Wahlburg without a shirt and a “steamy” strip club scene.

I have not laughed this hard at a movie in a while. Granted, the film was nowhere near perfect. The script was disappointingly not up to the caliber which Fey and Carell deserve.  Veteran comedians with more than  little T.V. shows under their belts — Carell has starred in most notably “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and “Get Smart” while Fey has countless “SNL” appearances to her name and that little movie “Mean Girls” in which she starred and also wrote– both deserved a better script. It was evident during the end credits however, that a lot of  improvisation went on while filming. Their chemistry was brilliant and can be seen in interviews here.

Hopefully this is not the last Fey, Carell pairing we will see on the silver screen.  Hollywood needs to wake up and produce entertaining scripts and not  just leave it to the actors to carry the film.    Fey should write the script for the next adventure they embark on. Perhaps a merging of two works,Liz Lemon and Michael Scott taking over the world. Now that would sure beat “Clash of the Titans” at the box office.
