Editor Pick of the Day: SunChip Bags Going Green

Out of the many meal options at Blanchard Campus Center, most of us have tried the numerous SunChips available. SunChips are already a well-known healthy multigrain alternative to highly processed snack items. But later, as we compost the remnants of our veggie wraps in the compost/trash station, we cannot help but feel the guilt of trashing the empty SunChips bag. Well, now feel guilt no more, because SunChip bags are going green!  In celebration of Earth Day this year, the Frito Lay Company will be making SunChips bags the first compostable bags ever. According to the company, after fourteen weeks in the earth, the chip bag will have completely decomposed. Although the production of the outer layer of the bags, made of polylactic acid from plants has already begun, the company is still working on making the inside compostable while maintaining the chips fresh. Part of the problem is that the material of the bag may allow moisture to permeate, which would jeopardize the quality of the chip. Hopefully, these innovations will arrive in Blanchard next year and we can all proudly put our SunChip bags in the compost bin.

In the meantime, check out this article in the USA Today about the current production of the bags. Click here.
