Have you ever met Nika Meyers? If not, let me tell you a thing or two about one of the most genuinely fashionable and kind girls on campus. You don’t have to go far to find people with individual and inspiring style. Nika is a junior at Mount Holyoke who in my humble opinion dresses smartly every single day. As an Art Studio major, perhaps she uses her knowledge of color and oeuvre to put together characteristically composed ensembles in what she wears.
Francesca Bozzelli | The Mount Holyoke NewsNika Meyers is an individual whose unique sensibilities in fashion are an extension of her personality and being. Almost as if a sampling peaceful decades past, her style speaks to the hippie fashions of the late 70s. Sustaining a sense of euphoria when it comes to clothing and life in general, Nika doesn’t follow generic trends set by popular media. With a casually bohemian aesthetic of earthy colors and vibrant patterns, her wardrobe seems to be that of a world traveler. Perhaps influenced by her recent study abroad in Australia, Nika says that her color palette was previously mostly vibrant and colorful, but after a few months in Australia her wardrobe now reflects a distinct attitude towards earth tones and layering.
Most notable are her classically detailed worked pieces: worn-in, camel leather boots (her mom’s old Fryes) with intricate stitching, and stamped metal chandelier earrings. Both these signature pieces seem to be relics of the past or studies of cultures that respected the earth and its resources. An adamant lover of produce and organic living, Nika has translated her ideas about loving the earth into her wardrobe. Most of her clothing has a past—whether given to her by a close relative, or collected in travels, her wardrobe has a connection to the earth and its cultures. Nika’s clothes have an eccentric vibe, featuring embroidery or silk patterning, and most of her clothing seems to have value in its history.
Nika is inspiring because she wears what makes her happy as an individual. She does not focus on what may be trendy, but rather chooses to differentiate and explain who she is through her clothes. While representing herself well, she also reflects an attitude of this campus: the thought that we all have a place. We are women who dare to be different, so let this idea lead you all on your way to wardrobe enlightenment. Think about how your clothing represents you not only a person, but also a unique individual who has something to say.
