The Mount Holyoke tennis team struggled last Saturday in their first spring season home match, losing both singles and doubles matches against Bates College for a final outcome of 9-0.
The Bates College Bobcats play in a higher division than Mount Holyoke and have beatten the Lyons for the past six seasons.
Mount Holyoke concluded its fall 2009 season with an overall standing of 4-7-0. The Lyons are currently ranked sixth among eight schools in the NEWMAC division.
A high point of Saturday’s dual match was the performance of Sarah London ’10. London held off against Bates competitor Katie Helfgott, taking her to three sets before losing 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 10-5.
“We definitely struggled on Saturday, but Bates is in a higher division,” said former Lyon of the Week Carly Peltier ’13. “We’ll see how the season goes. Last season we made it to the playoffs.”
Mount Holyoke appeared in the playoffs last season, losing 5-3 in the quarterfinals to Smith College. The seasonal Championship was ultimately won by Wheaton College.
Mount Holyoke kicks off the Seven Sisters Championship at Smith starting on March 27 with a match against Vassar College. Future spring season home matches are scheduled for April 10 and April 17 against Roger Williams University and Union College, respectively.
