Dressage opens spring season in style

The Mount Holyoke Dressage Team won its home show on Feb. 20.

On Feb. 20 the Mount Holyoke Dressage Team won its first competition of the spring season. A member of the Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) and the host of the event, Mount Holyoke proved exceptionally well-prepared, winning both first and second place in the nine team competition, and claiming both the High Point and Reserve High Point Riders as their own.

Led by coach Rebecca Schurink, three out of the eight riders brought home blue, including Amanda Ross ’11 who was High Point Rider and undefeated at the intro (walk-trot) level. Shoshana Lucich ’10 was Reserve High Point Rider with a first place finish at the Upper Training Level, while Mackenzie Cameron ’11 also brought home blue while riding at First Level. Schurink, a USDF silver medalist, stated: “There were many personal bests this weekend particularly in regards to confidence and positive thinking.” Emme Johnston ’10, team captain, added, “All of the team competitors rode excellent tests and a large part of our winning was all of the support that these riders got from the rest of the team.”

There are 15 members on the Mount Holyoke Dressage Team, ranging from first-years to seniors, all with a wide range of dressage experience. They hope to keep up their winning momentum at the March 20 UCONN Dressage Show.
