How long have you being playing squash?
I’ve been playing squash for ten years.
What’s your thought on this season so far?
This season has been pretty good. The training is so hard, and I feel it’s the best training program I’ve had in my three years here. We play games very competitively. Our opponents are mostly Ivy League colleges. We did very well, though not as well as we expected. We ranked 11th on College Squash and Bates College was the 12th. Then Bates beat us and they moved up. The last game of this season will be on this coming weekend. We hope that we can do really well in the coming game and get our spot back. Hopefully we could move even a bit higher.
What’s your favorite part about playing squash?
The competitiveness.
What’s your least favorite part about playing squash?
Ghosting.
Is there any personal recognition that you’re especially proud of?
I was ranked No. 3 on the Sri Lanka National Women’s Team. And I won a silver medal in the South Asian Games in 2006.
What special recognition has your team received?
The Sportsmanship Award in 2008. Also being ranked 11th in College Squash is, I feel, the best award we’ve gotten so far.
What’s your favorite part about being on Mount Holyoke Squash Team?
The team is like a family. When I joined the College, the team was one thing which made me feel that I belong to this place, especially since I’m an international student.
What’s your least favorite part about being on the team?
It’s a hard question and I would just leave it blank. Everything about the team is good. I do love most of the stuff about the team, and as to the rest, I don’t either like or dislike them.
What other activities have you been involved in at MHC?
I do traditional Sri Lankan Dance. I performed Sri Lankan and Indian dance at Variasians and Festival of Diversity. I hope that I’ll perform at an upcoming UMass concert. I’m in a newly founded club called Women of Business. I also play badminton.
Will you continue to play squash after college?
I will play for fun and I might do a little bit of coaching, but I won’t play competitively. I want to do fashion merchandising so I don’t think I’ll do squash as a career.
What’s your favorite thing about Mount Holyoke?
The fact that it’s a very strong women’s college. People here are really ambitious. When talking about jobs, they do talk about very high goals. Mount Holyoke really encourages me, not just in the classroom but everywhere, and makes me feel that I can do anything.
