On March 8, in honor of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, U.S. women leaders joined President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama to celebrate at the White House. Mount Holyoke President Joanne V. Creighton was one of the guests.
President Creighton and former acting Mount Holyoke president Beverly Daniel Tatum, now president of Spelman College, sat in the third row and had the opportunity to shake hands with the President. Kim Bottomly and Jane McAuliffe, presidents of Wellesley and Bryn Mawr, respectively, were also present at the event.
In addition to remarks by Michelle Obama followed by President Obama, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright spoke at the event. Albright gave the Mount Holyoke commencement address in 1997.
“There was a great esprit at the gathering,” Creighton said in a press release. “It was wonderful to see notable women from many different sectors, along with school girls of various ages, coming together to celebrate women’s history and achievement. I was encouraged by the President’s strongly voiced commitment to continuing to press for women’s equality and opportunity.”
