Science and religion unite: Sages and Scientists Symposium

Sages and Scientists

Whether you believe it or not, the idea of positive thinking as a cure for cancer is becoming a widely accepted concept. Or maybe you’ve heard the idea that the environmental crises of the world can be solved by a change in the energy of the universe. These are both controversial solutions to some of the major scientific problems of today – but along with many others, they were topics of major discussion during the “Sages and Scientists: The Merging of a New Future” Symposium held in Carlsbad, CA last month.

Hosted by Deepak Chopra, M.D., an international leader in alternative medicine, the event aimed to merge the ideas of a panel of prominent scientists and sages in order to gain insight into the improvement of human life and our planet’s well-being.

One constant topic of the symposium was the idea of a universal energy. Both scientists and sages alike insisted that all people and all things living are part of the greater energy of the universe, and therefore are all part of one another. Dr. Ervin Laszlo, an interdisciplinary philosopher, suggested that health and harmony can only be obtained once humankind acknowledges and accepts that this would be a better alternative. Some even blamed our ecological problems on the worldwide ignorance of this idea, claiming that because we do not view the world as part of us, we use it as a resource, and not something to be respected.

Another well-discussed topic among panelists was unexplainable phenomena in medicine. All agreed that although the concept was not looked well upon in the past, medical miracles which cannot be explained by science do occur. Scientists and sages are now working together to find concrete data and evidence in order to emphasize the importance of the supernatural in healing. Some studies have shown that there was a significant increase in the health of cancer patients when loved ones in other rooms emitted loving thoughts. Larry Dossey, M.D. argued that premonitions, for example, can cause patients to change their lifestyles and prevent serious health issues.

Supernatural occurrences apply not only to medicine, but to science in general. One example given was a man named Mahendra Kumar Trivedi, who transmits energy in the form of positive conscious thinking. He demonstrated that improvements in healing occur in various fields of science due to positive thinking alone. One of his most impressive successes was changing the actual DNA makeup of plants, microbes, and bacteria.

Filled with incredible anecdotes and data, the main message of the symposium was clear: humankind is at a crossroads. We must choose to either continue on our self-destructive path or make a change in the way we think. As our generation will be the one to assume that responsibility, we must combine the two realms of science and spitituality to create a unified approach to the critical issues of our world.
