Politician Sonia Gandhi is behind India’s recent government bill to increase women’s membership in the federal and state assemblies. Gandhi, the Economist reported this week, consistently faced political opposition and pushed for a change in India’s constitution. Soon, the law will impose a 33 percent quota for women in Parliament and assemblies.
The implications of the bill, however, are complex, raising questions about the agenda behind the future election of certain women. Could they be merely marionettes of a male family member or a high-caste party?
