Dems launch new blog

In order to generate more political discussion on campus and in the greater South Hadley community, on Wednesday, Dec. 8, the Mount Holyoke College Democrats (MHC?Dems) launched a new political blog called “The Sententia” or “The Sent.”

To start out, the Dems enlisted several of their own members as well as certain people in the broader Mount Holyoke community.

In January, the Dems opened the blog up to all students who wished to write for it. Upon the College Dems’ request, South Hadley Democratic Committee member Bob Judge has already submitted a “blurb” to the blog. The writers’ blurbs will consist of 250 words or less and cover a wide range of local and national politically relevant issues.

Mount Holyoke Politics Professor Calvin Chen and many other past and current members of the Dems are slated to submit blurbs to the blog.

“The main purpose behind the blog is to foster any and all political discourse on campus. We wanted to create an open forum where all views could be expressed,” said Cat Braine ’11 who is an editor of the blog.

“All submissions to the blog are welcome. It was originally intended to contain articles crafted by students, but we have extended an invitation to professors, alums and the greater MHC community.”
According to Elisa Loeser ’11, another editor of the College Dems’ blog, “the purpose of the blog is to start political discussion in the Mount Holyoke and Five College community.”

The Dems have had blogs in the past, but they were largely inactive. “We wanted to make a large effort to get people thinking and talking about political issues. In starting this blog, we also hope to create transparency between South Hadley politics and political organizations in the surrounding community.”

The Vice President, Secretary and Parliamentarian of the College Dems will be the editors of the blog and will be the ones to choose whether or not to post submitted blurbs “depending on if it will create political discussion or if the issue is pertinent to the campus and surrounding community,” said Loeser.

“We also hope to post updates on the blog from our group as well as from other orgs, such as the South Hadley Democratic Committee.”
